All About Maverick

ORIGIN

We got Maverick “King Neptune” Fowler as an 8 week old kitten on December 3rd, 2017 from the Kitsap Humane Society in Silverdale, WA.

Mave was found by a good samaritan in the woods at only 10 days old. We can only assume he was not out there alone for very long as it was winter time, but none the less, his medical records showed signs of failure to thrive. Despite the odds, he made it and we snatched him up a few weeks later

Last to join the pack

Though Mave was the last one of our animals to join the pack (fosters excluded), he and Sly made quick friends.

Sly was so patient and gentle with Mave, grooming him and always checking on him, like a mother. So much so, that Mave acts more like a greyhound at times than a cat, which is generally a good thing.

Mave and Sly snuggle, play with the same toys, drink from the same bowl, and sleep in the same places all day, every day.

Things did not go so well with our older cat, Olga. Post on her to come, but we got her as an adult and was the only mammal we had for a while. Getting Sly was a big adjustment for her, but a kitten almost pushed her off the edge.

They mostly get along now, but Mave still doesn’t know how to give her her space. Hopefully this gets a bit better as Mave ages.

KIND OF A WEIRD GUY

Maverick may be one of the strangest and craziest cats I have ever met, and working in the vet field, I meet a lot.

Part of the greyhound-isms that Mave adopted, is sleeping on his back, termed “roaching” or “ottering”.

Another interesting trait of this guy is his love of water.

At the age of only 8 months old, Mave developed FLUTD (feline lower urinary tract disease) as a result of urinary crystals and physiologic structural issues.

However, after a change in diet and addition of medications, he has been doing well since, but his water intake is very important to maintaining his urinary health.

Luckily, Mave does a pretty good job of regulating his water intake, by drinking out of the sinks when they are on, dipping into Sly’s water bowl, or stealing our own glass of water.

First he is sour…

Like most cats, Mave can be a bit of a fucking asshole that you break down and scream at in the middle of the night because he found a paper ball to play with and will not stop dropping on your face. You know, normal cat stuff.

He gets into his “kitty crack mode” where his pupils dilate, he shakes, and runs zoomies all over the house, parkoring off the furniture and taking a shit in a plant. Thankfully, these episodes do not last long, but there is no stopping it once it starts.

…Then he is sweet

With that said, Mave really is a sweet guy. We say he’s a good boy, bad cat, because he is a good boy making muffins and snuggling most of the day, but a bad cat for all the typical ‘cat behavior’ like scratching up the couch, going into the kitchen cabinets, and well, shitting in my plants.

Like I said above, Mave and Sly are inseparable. She is the only one he never play bites, scratches, annoys, or displays any negative behavior towards. Yes, I do get jealous of that, but I’m glad Mave chose the nicest dog in the world to be nice to. She deserves it.

Now, my little guy has his adorable moments and routines. How he lays on my chest EVERY NIGHT and makes muffins and drools all over me. Or how he sits on my bathroom counter just watching me get ready for the day and hoping that I run my make up brushes over his face, he really likes that. He really is a special guy.

Even though the five years we have had Maverick have felt like fifty, we do love the big chungus. He has so much personality and spunk, and really does seem to understand what we are saying, though he doesn’t always listen. He is the typical asshole cat, but shows his love just as intensely.

Thanks for reading about our sweet guy!

Always adopt, don’t shop when looking for a new animal family member. So many shelters are over capacity, made worse by the breeding industry. There are so many pets out there already that need a home.
