Letting Go

I recently stumbled across a folder with a bunch of my creative writing assignments from high school. While most are cringe, there were a few that impressed me.

Bellow is one titled “Letting Go” and was written as part of our eulogy study. My childhood beagle Sally, passed away from lymphoma a few years before this assignment so I paid tribute to her with the following poem:

Letting Go

By Kacie Fowler, written in 2011

As tears form in the pit of her eyes, she must let her friend go.

Some say she went to the sky,

Others say they do not know.

This is the hardest thing to do,

To let loose of her body.

But her time has long come,

Her legs no longer steady.

Not a day goes by,

Where there are not tears in the pit of her eyes.

She cannot say her name,

For it is too sad.

There’s only nature to blame,

And that is what makes her mad.

As time ticks on,

More will come along.

Others sent by her,

Their hearts oh so pure.

Whether fast or smart,

The first one will always be in her heart.

There will still be tears in the pit of her eyes,

But now only laughter will make her cry.

Speaking her name, now brings a smile to her face.

For this is truly, her final resting place.

Not too bad honestly. There are many more poems and short stories that I want to revisit from school. My creative writing class was taught by one of my favorite teachers I ever had (though I wish I told her that more often).

She was really the first of my teachers who seemed to genuinely give a shit about teaching us the importance literature and of own writings. While the rest of the class fucked off, I thoroughly enjoyed every single one of her lessons.
