Life on Mars- Capital Hill, Seattle

This 100% plant-based restaurant and cocktail bar provides a chill atmosphere one could luxuriate in from lunch to the late evening.

When you go, check out their ‘out of this world’ merch and wall of records, both for purchase and for playing live through their speakers.

We have gone to Life on Mars three times now and have loved every bit of it.

Their Nachos feature Chorizo (of a crispy ‘Chick’N) with fresh made queso, guacamole, pinto beans, onions, tomatoes, jalapeños, and lettuce, all topped with sour cream. Great distribution of toppings and a good portion for the price.

While the fish & chips were nothing special (nicely breaded and the aioli was on point, but their were the frozen Gardein fish fillets) their ‘Mars Platter’ was the perfect mix of flavors.

Consisting of their “famous” cauliflower wings in their four sauces- Buffalo, BBQ, Mango Habanero, and Garlic-butter Parmesan- blue cheese dipping sauce, and sides of Brussel sprouts, LOM crab cakes, and (at this time, which is no longer stated on their menu) potato salad. This platter was a flavor sensation with sweetness, saltiness, spiciness, and richness swirling around bite to bite. I fully understand why their cauliflower wings are “famous” as these were the best and most crispy bits I have had.

Before the Mars Platter may have become out new favorite, on our first trip here for brunch, I had my first ever vegan eggs Benedict, thoughtfully called ‘Benny & The Jets’ here. Choice of Just Egg scramble or YO Egg atop an English muffin, mushrooms, spinach, avocado, and breakfast sausage. Having never heard of YO Egg before, I gave it a go and I was delighted to cut into a ‘runny egg’. Watching the ‘yolk’ cascade down to mix with the perfection that is their hollandaise sauce let me know this place was special.

Now, at a place that blew my mind and taste buds away, I had to know what dessert options were in store for us.

With zero disappointment and 100% excitement, we ordered their Tres Leche Cake. Soaked with coconut cream in place of dairy, their sweetness of the vanilla base and orange essence collided to create absolute fireworks of flavor.

I cannot wait to return.

El Borracho- Pike Place Market, Seattle

Not a place remotely new for us, in fact it’s firm place on our ‘top restaurants in Seattle’ list, predates this blog (and thus my photos).

This gem sits on 1st Ave up the hill from Pike Place Market. They are a 100% plant-based “homage to Mexican food”.

They have a wide variety of options from street-food style quick bites to bowls and platters.

Their choose-your-own salsa fridge contains the perfect way to add a bit of heat to their seitan chicken, oyster mushroom al pastor, and jackfruit carnitas. I would argue though, that my favorite things about El Borracho is their queso. Made in house this is the smoothest and cheesy-est vegan queso I have tried to date. It has the right amount of heat and flavor that you might just catch me sipping out of the cup once the chips are gone!

Always a go-to restaurant when we are touring Pike Place or catching a ferry ride back to Bainbridge.
